CHAPTER 12
ELLA
I envy those girls who can take a compliment without turning the color of Mars. I really do.
Immediately after Ethan said the words âbeautifully gorgeous,â I know for a fact my entire face turned red. Usually, I can control my tendency to blush, but I hadnât been expecting him to say that. Iâll just blame my rosiness on nerves. Because right now, Iâm nervous as hell. I donât think Iâve sat down since Catherine finished my hair and makeup.
When she went out to buy me a dress, I was expecting something simple. I was not expecting her to return with this Gucci dress. Then I saw the $5,000 price tag.
I got her car keys and was ready to drive to the store myself to return the dress, but the she-hulk tackled me and stopped me. I donât know what was in the Hawaiian air, but she has definitely lost her mind. I know for a fact that she wouldnât be caught dead in a dress like this, so why would she do this to me? Although while Catherine despises dresses with every fiber of her being, I wear them happilyâwhen they donât cost an arm and a leg, that is. I argued with her about it, but we agreed that I need to try my best to look the part or his parents would probably disown him like he said.
I still canât believe she convinced me to wear this.
The dress is light blue and delicate lace. It hugs me very tightly down to my waist, then flares just a little till it stops just above my knees.
Iâm able to start walking toward my room to take it off when Catherine steps in front of me with her hand outstretches to stop me.
âNo,â she says resolutely.
âCatherine, I love you. But if you donât move out of my way, I swear Iâll jam my heel into your eyes.â
She has zero reaction to the threat. With a bored expression, my best friend turns to Ethan, who is still staring at me like I just stepped out of a magazine.
âMake her wear the damn dress,â Catherine says to him.
âSheâs wearing the dress,â Ethan affirms.
I throw my arms up in the air before moving toward the couch and settling on it. âIâm not going anymore. I feel like Iâm overdressed and I feel self-conscious and terrible andâ¦â
Ethan sighs heavily before coming to seat beside me. âYouâre not overdressed. And you look gorgeous. I think my dad will actually be impressed. I sure as hell am,â he says, and he sounds so genuine, I decide to just go with it.
Worst-case scenario, heâs forced to fake dump his fake girlfriend. And he still hasnât explained why we need to be in this situation in the first place.
âWeâll talk on the way. Just let me get dressed first,â he says like heâs reading my mind.
I nod and he heads into his room, leaving me alone with Catherine. Sheâs looking at me with a concerned expression.
âIâll be fine,â I promise my best friend.
